Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach Waffle Stix Waffle MakerCustomer Review: Very nice waffles Summary: 5 Stars
I have a great little wafflemaker I really like, but whenever my in-laws are over, I can't seem to crank them out fast enough. About 6 months ago I spent over $120 on a fancy waffle maker with interchangable faceplates that would let me make waffles, grill panninis, etc. from the 'Chef's Catalog'. In ahort, I hated it. $100, spent on a piece of junk. Made soggy waffles that wouldn't crisp up, the non-stick surface wore off, and the plates never seemed to fit on straight. All I really needed was a second little one-trick pony that made good waffles.
So I found this one. thought the 'waffle stick' thing was a neat gimmick, but didn't really think I'd use it much. I have now had this waffle maker a week and I have used it every day. It has quickly become my favorite of the 3 I own.
Reasons I like it:
The cord is long... the cord on my first one is very short in comparison, so this gives me a little extra maneuvering room on my counter.
It gets hot enough to make a crisp waffle that is still moist inside. Waffle makers don't exactly have temperature controls, so you are kind-of at their mercy. If they don't get hot enough, you either end up with something more like bread, or dried out to be more like toast. This gets hot enough to have a crisp outside, while leaving enough moisture in the waffle to make it actually SEEM like a waffle. It actually makes them crisp enough to break into waffle sticks.
The nonstick surface works.
It is easy to clean.
The instruction manual comes with recipes, although any cookbook recipe or commercial batter should work just fine. Use your favorite - no waffle iron is going to make a recipe you don't like taste any better.
Mine takes about 5 minutes to crank out two waffles, of course this will depend on the amount of moisture in your recipe. If you have more than 4 people sitting around waiting for breakfast, this won't crank them out fast enough... but this is cheap enough - buy two. I wish I had done that and saved the $120 I spent on the expensive piece of junk.
