Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric KettleCustomer Review: Terrible product design -- causes scalding and lid to fall out Summary: 1 StarsI tried this product because it was rated so highly by others on this site and was sorely disappointed. During normal operation of pouring hot water from the unit, the lid falls out and steaming hot water comes rushing out. I got scalded a couple of times. This is a terrible product and a lawsuit in the making for this company.
Customer Review: Hamilton Beach Electric Kettle Summary: 5 StarsAfter reading other people's reviews and doing research, like some of the other reviewers, I found this great stainless steel kettle. I read and researched online before buying another kettle, all my previous electric kettles were plastic, and I initially bought the Aroma kettle from Target. Like the Hamilton Beach kettle, the Aroma had a filter that looked plastic, so I tried to remove the plastic filter, but couldn't do it without making the kettle functionless. Then I found the Hamilton Beach Cool Touch. The release button on top of the handle opens the top lid; with the lid open, the hot water never needs to come into contact with the plastic holding the filter together. So, I just boil water and open the lid before I pour into my cup. To close the lid, I have to push the button to retract the protruding little nodules holding the lid. I also like the design because it fits my kitchen very well; it is stainless steel and black - it looks very sleek in my kitchen where the microwave, the stove and the refrigerator are all black. Like some other reviewers, I also dislike boiling water on the stove. It always rattles me when I hear the whistling if I happen to have run off to the bathroom or the bedroom and have to make a mad dash back to the kitchen before I disturb the entire neighborhood (of course, that's an exaggeration, but I do make a mad dash back to the kitchen as if a fire were engulfing it).
Customer Review: The kettle tha lasts Summary: 5 StarsI had many kettles over the years. Maybe way too many and they kept braking on me. My wife and I decided to switch electric kettle after many accidents with conventional kettles. We would frequently fry them since they would have no water. We were skeptical to go the electric kettle way, b/c most of them are made of plastic. This one is different. It is 100% stainless steel except a small piece of plastic on top, which technically does not get in touch with water. The main advantages for us are:
1) It shuts off automatically.
2) It lasted for more than a year now. We use it heavily several times a day.
3) Since we use purified water there is no deposit usually. But after a while (few month time) sometime one can see a thin layer of deposit (which usually means a time to change your filter elements). The advantage of this kettle is how easy to remove to top cover (it is removable) and easy way to wash the surface with abrasives. My (male) hand gets to all places in kettle chamber without any problems. This way we always stay with consistently clean boiled water for our tea.
4) Some people mentioned the it does not have temp sensor or water level. If it would it would have plastic lining. So, I consider this as an advantage. Buy yourself an inexpensive thermometer (needle) to monitor temperature in the tea pot before actually mixing with tea and you'll get the best consistency possible - this is very important for green teas, especially those made with steaming process.
5) Some complain that "Hard-To-See "Max" Water Fill Mark". It is not a problem for me as I consistently overload and NEVER had any problems with it.
6) It looks nice on you kitchen especially if you are in black and stainless steel interior.
7) I never got any burns with this kettle and I can put it safely on my dining table or on wooden tea desk. This is a big advantage for us.
! Although it is not an issue for us, the electric cord is very short and this could be a problem for some people.
I am so sold that I consider getting one more for my office at work!
Customer Review: Good No Plastic Kettle - but NOT cool on outside Summary: 5 StarsThis is pretty much the only kettle I could find that didn't contain any plastic in the areas where the water is boiled. So that's great. However, it is not cool to the touch - it's still pretty hot when you touch it right after the water has boiled!
Customer Review: Best stainless steel kettle out there Summary: 4 StarsIt has a seamless stainless steel interior but a plastic lid which is a pain because I wanted to get away from plastic. However you can leave the lid off and I have just replaced it with a small saucepan lid. Hopefully it will be okay.
It is solid and much better than the aroma kettle that is on here. That is flimsy and cheap.
